What is Juvenile Breast Hypertrophy?

Many women with large pendulous breasts had them start to develop at a young age. Some young girls are considering cosmetic plastic surgery for breast reduction at an age as early as 13 or 14. Large breasts can cause physical pain of the neck, shoulders and back, in addition to this is the psychological distress of teasing by classmates.  It is not unusual for parents to bring their young daughters in for a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon to find out what their options are.

Not all surgeons agree on the same course of action. There are several things to carefully consider. For the young woman, the breasts have a tendency to continue to grow until possibly into their early twenties, which could mean secondary surgery may be needed in the future. Her ability to breast feed at a later date may be significantly compromised. She needs to understand that the scarring will be permanent but over time will fade. With all of this, depending on the maturity of the girl and the support of her parents, she may be a candidate for reduction mammoplasty if her discomfort physically and mentally is great.
