What is Non-Surgical Breast Reduction?

San Francisco Bay Area women with large pendulous breasts, (also known as; macromastia, hypertrophy of the breasts, gigantomastia, mammary hyperplasia, to name a few) are intrigued to hear that there are non-surgical breast reduction options.

Breast Tissue and Fat

The breast is made up of fat and breast tissue. For the woman whose large breasts are mostly attributed to fat, diet and exercise may help with their reduction but the results are unpredictable. For some women who take hormones, they may find once they stop them their breasts may go back to a previous size.

Liposuction

Liposuction is becoming more popular for a less invasive procedure that can reduce the breast by one or two cup sizes. Liposuction has always been part of the reduction mammoplasty procedure until 1991 where it became experimental as a standalone procedure with great results. It is somewhat misleading to call liposuction as a non-surgical procedure, as liposuction is considered surgery.

There have been some new ultrasonic machines recently approved by the FDA, such as Liposonix and Ultrashape but the locations for fat removal have been limited to the waistline, stomach, flanks and thighs.

Gynecomastia

Interestingly, men who have developed breasts with a condition called gynecomastia seek correction by liposuction alone. Due to the presence of breast tissue along with fat, this is not an acceptable procedure unless their condition is “pseudo-gynecomastia” which is caused by fat alone.

One must realize that only certain women are candidates for the liposuction breast reduction. It is for the woman that has minor to moderate macromastia. Younger women with good skin elasticity have better results. The skin will only contract to a certain extent and then may sag. There would not be any lifting with the procedure, the breasts will not change shape, just become a smaller version of what they were prior to liposuction.
