A Brazilian butt lift (BBL) is a surgical procedure that harvests the fat from one part of your body and transplants it to the buttock region. This fat is often taken from the abdomen, flanks, back, or from other locations on the body if more volume is needed. If you are interested in BBL, please continue reading the detail sections below for more information, or simply contact our practice today to schedule a personal consultation with Dr. Delgado.

Anyone who is healthy, stores extra body fat, and has fairly good buttock skin tone is typically considered a good candidate for a Brazilian butt lift. A suitable skin tone is necessary because sagging and very loose skin does not hold the fat volume in a firm and shapely position and may even cause a distorted and unattractive appearance. If not enough fat is present to be harvested, some patients gain weight to increase fatty tissue accumulation. Others resort to a Sculptra® butt lift, which the Kardashians have popularized.

In a Brazilian Butt Lift, the extracted tissue is put through a process to clean and concentrate the fat globules, which are then injected like a “string of beads” to allow a good vascular supply to optimize the viability. The transferred fat is placed artistically to enhance the shape, volume, and projection of the buttocks.

A BBL is performed under general anesthesia. You will be prepared for sterilization so your body can be turned 360 degrees on the operating table. Dr. Delgado will choose from where to harvest the fat, and those areas are then injected with tumescent fluid. This is important because this fluid has medication that constricts blood vessels to reduce blood loss.

The solution also contains Lidocaine, which reduces postoperative pain. Once the tumescent fluid is injected, fat in the body area(s) (typically the abdomen, flanks, or back) is ready to be harvested. Dr. Delgado uses Power-Assisted Liposuction (PAL), which vibrates the suction cannula thousand of times per minute to extract the fat aggressively but smoothly.

The harvested fat is then washed, concentrated, and prepared for injection into the buttocks, and the patient is turned over on the stomach and situated in a slightly flexed position. Lastly, the fat is artistically injected into the buttocks to enhance shape, volume, and projection, ultimately yielding the beautiful silhouette of the Brazilian butt lift.

Brazilian butt lift recovery is typically about a six to eight-week process. Most patients can return to work after a few weeks, though a special BBL compression garment will need to be worn for six weeks to aid with healing. The primary issue is that you can not sit directly on your butt region because the fat cells will be damaged before the vascular ingrowth occurs, which ensures permanent survival.

Patients are advised to sit with pressure on the upper thighs, and specific pillow devices can often be used in particular situations (such as sitting in the car).

Exercise can generally be resumed after about six weeks, and most patients are entirely back to normal in about eight weeks.

This is the good news—Brazilian butt lift results are long-lasting once the fat cell grafts are established. Not all fat cells survive, however.

Patients sometimes like it when the butt cheeks are swollen after surgery, but this is postoperative swelling and does not reflect the actual surgical outcome. You will typically see the final, lasting outcome in about three months.

At our San Francisco and Marin County practice, a Brazilian butt lift typically costs between $10,000–15,000, which includes the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia cost, operating room expenses, compression garments, and all postoperative care. The range is wide due to how many surgical areas on the body it may take to retrieve the required fat and how much fat is transferred to the buttocks. In comparison to other cosmetic surgery procedures, BBL typically takes more surgical hours to complete, which also influences its pricing.
